An Australian company must have a registered office to receive correspondence and does not need to be the same as the company’s principal place of business, however it cannot be a post office box.
This service of a registered office is beneficial to make sure you don’t have unnecessary fines for simple matters such as late lodgement of your annual return, change of address of the directors or a change of shareholding.
This service can also be particularly useful for new businesses or smaller companies, such as those being run by a sole director. It is often advantageous to conceal the fact a business is only small, especially when starting out and a simple search can very quickly disclose the fact that the company is registered at the director’s home address.
